Trying Lauren Karle’s Transfer Method

For a class project, I needed to find an artist who is known for hand-building functional pottery and to make a pot that is influenced by that artist.

I picked Lauren Karle due to her wonderful mugs. I purchased her “Sewing with Clay” DVD and with the help of Cheryl Crownover (my SFCC teacher), I was able to build this lidded vessel. Lauren in her video challenged others to create their own patterns to transfer onto clay. Thinking of what patterns I could use, I remembered that I had created a Cat Tessellation for another class last year and decided to modify it.

Being the perfectionist that I am, I attempted to transfer my kitties again. I wanted to make two mugs out of the same textile (decorated clay slab). Unfortunately, on my first mug my slab was too dry and cracked when I attempted to shape it. Fortunately, before I shaped the next one, it occurred to me to dampened the back of my textile with a spray bottle filled with water.

That was the trick, and I was able to make one mug. With the cracking problem I didn’t dare try placing and shaping 5 darts. Thinking the cracked slab has just become my glazing test tiles 🙂

I have since worked some more on my Cat Tessellation, and now have 3 transfer sheets. One for the pink cats, another for the turquoise cats, and finally one with just the eyes. I need to remember to place a register mark to help me line them all up.

This project has been quite the challenge, but I feel my Mom, the quilter, watching over me, cheering my on, from her pink balloon floating up in the sky.

Glazing cont.

 

I first did some wax resist dots and wavy line on the piece on the left. Both were dipped in my favorite glaze Yellow Salt. I am hoping for some very cool browning around the carved areas. 1018172001

Below is my second of three two color combos done opposite. I used Butter Ranch and Blue Jean glaze. The piece on the right was dipped in Butter Ranch with wavy lines of Blue Jean brushed on the outside. The piece on the left was dipped in Blue Jean and a line of Butter Ranch was painted just below the rim on the outside.

I remember after I got home that I forgot to dust off my bowls before I glazed. I hope I don’t regret it.

On Thursday, I used a toothbrush to splatter the opposite color glazes on top.

Christmas morning AKA glazed pieces out of the kiln

My teacher Francie was so right when she said seeing your glazed pottery would be like Christmas morning. You just never know what to expect, some items surprise you and others disappoint.

The above is my favorite piece. It is glazed with yellow salt after round sticker were applied to the bisque. I love how parts of it browned.

Below is the disappointment. The painted OM symbol and “be here now” didn’t show up after the glaze fire. I dipped the mug in Butter Ranch glaze and the letters are painted on using Malcolm Dave’s Shino.

These two blow my mind! They were done opposite yet they look the same (except the insides). Glazed with John’s Red and Lil Street Tinmoku. The mug was dipped completely in John’s Red and the the top part was dipped in Lil Street Tinmoku. The chunker cylinder on the left was dipped the opposite way.

Below, I believe I used Reitz Green and the three dips method. I am thinking the top dip ended up inside the cup. Pretty wild how the single dip is brown, not green.

Below is a wax resist. On the inside of the mug I used Nick’s Yellow and then dipped the whole mug in Pale Blue Celendon. The yellow and blue made green on the inside 🙂

Below, I used blue jean glaze. I did three dips. First, whole item dipped using tongs to hold the cup. The second dip was done while holding the mug upside down, and inserted into the glaze up to the second carved groove. The third dip was again done the same as the second and dipped up to the first carved groove.

Below I choose John’s Red glaze. Again I did the three dips technique (it is an assignment). The third dip is just on the rim of the cylinder.

In class tonight I continued on with glazing.

1009171939These two pieces are both done with John’s Red and Lil Street Tinmoku. The mug on the right was dipped completely in John’s Red and the the top part was dipped in Lil Street Tinmoku. The chunker cylinder on the left was dipped the opposite way. You might think I am getting my colors backwards, but I am not. That is the wonder of glaze.

Glazing Has Begun

I did some glazing today, my very first time. It was fun. I am excited to see the end results. Hope I don’t have to wait too long. The kiln shelves looked pretty bare. First, I waxed the feet of all by bisque fired pieces.

1008171407Here, I used stickers to mask off the bisque. My plan was to use the stickers to mask off different layers of the glaze, but darn it the stickers wouldn’t stick to the dried glaze. I am praying the glaze doesn’t run and ruin my dots. The glaze I choose is yellow salt. I held the handle (shh don’t tell) to dunk it sideways into the glaze bucket. After the first dip dried I dipped the the rest of the handle. The glaze overlaps on the handle just a bit.

1008171422(1)The last item I glazed today, again using the three dip method. I used a green glaze (I forgot to text the name to myself, my bad). With this color you can really see the dips. The last dip is up toward the top.

It is fun to see the glaze in this state and the colors are so different than their names.

Out of the Kiln

My first set of cylinders and mugs out of the kiln. Good thing my classmate Toni showed me where to look AND to look for something a light pink! I never would have thought my grey wet clay, that turned white when dry, would change to pink when fired.

These items were in the kiln for appropriately 24 hours, with a one hour preheat, the cone setting was 04 (for my NM Sol cone 10 clay) at a slow setting. Two of my items were fired with another batch, due to being too wet to put in with the first batch. They were unloaded today (after I took pictures) and I am very happy to say they all survived.

Boy did the big chunka one (not pictured here) shrink, thank goodness.

My work ready for the kiln

In class tonight we learned how to load the kiln. I was surprised how much you can fit into one. Not everything of mine was dry enough to load. I was able to tell by how cold it felt when held against my cheek or inside of my wrist.

3 Mugs with handles attached

Tonight I pulled three handles with much better success than the first night I tried. Must have a very light touch and gently squeeze from the top of the carrot (of clay) downward. And, wait until my right hand is off the clay before rotating the carrot or shit 🙂

I really enjoy the trimming process. Very meditative! I put a hand mirror in front of the wheel to watch what I was trimming. Works much better than leaning over to the side to check. Dang dollar store mirror is warped, good thing it was only a dollar.
